Why are PHP books and videos hard for people?

April 16, 2007

I’ve read 20+ books on PHP and have watched many videos. One thing that I found consistent about all of them was how they were not ‘friendly’ to non-nerd types.

Why?

Probably because (most of the time,) only hardcore code-monkeys seem to be writing these books. That means either one of two things:

  1. They forget WHAT made it hard to learn to program.
  2. They never had trouble (in the first place) because they were … well, hardcore code-monkeys!

Fortunately for you, I was not born a hardcore code-monkey (I was hardcore in other areas …) and I still remember those tricky concepts that frustrated me.

With that in mind, I designed the videos to make learning PHP dead simple. In fact (from what I hear,) my PHP videos make learning PHP easier than any other source out there!

Yes, this is a bold statement, but the emails and conversations (from people all around the world) tell a story.

… I used to read and then delete the many comments and emails I would get. But a marketing buddy of mine slapped me off side the head, and reminded me that I should be posting these.

Check out some of the comments below.

Thanks,

Stefan Mischook

    Stefan Hi!

Thank you very much for your video training for PHP.

I’m well versed with other programming and dev environments … I’ve
been meaning to learn PHP but never had the time to do all the long
winded research to find the right tools and training material etc.
Doing all that prep work is extremely important and is really the hard
part about getting started. You made it soooo easy to start and also
    to learn.

Well done and thank you again.

    Hi Stefan,

I’m four deep in your php videos and I must say that I have a much greater understanding of how this works and what to do now.

You really got me thinking that I can do this just as you did with you’re css tutorials.

Thank you so much for doing what you do.

I would like to thank you for your amazing work on the PHP videos. That is for years that I am trying to understand Php but every book I bought until now have been more scary than welcoming. I won’t say the same thing about your videos ! At least I understand how it works now ! What a relief.

I want to congratulate you also for your speech because as a French woman it is not always easy for me to have a training in a foreign language but you made it very easy.

I hope there will be more videos soon, I think I am addicted !

    Many thanks again.

    Stefan,

Just wanted to thank you for taking the time to produce and post those PHP videos. I’ve watched them all and will admit that you have, with just a few words and an example, cleared up some misconceptions with my understanding of some core concepts.

You’ve done a masterful job at making the complex seem, well… less complex. I do hope you plan on making more of these. You’re providing a wonderful service for the industry.

    Thanks again,
